Ellie’s Crop Report: June 12, 2011

Ellie the cat looking out the window on raised beds in the backyardMore recently, Ellie has been watching the garden activities from a different window that we leave open for her to sniff out what’s going on during the day. Here are highlights of what’s growing:

1. We thinned the kohlrabi and turnips from B4 (bed 4). Well, my style is not unplugging extra plants that don’t fit the space and discarding them. I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that. Instead I cleared some other places for them to go. The extra kohlrabi have new homes along our raised beds on either side, and will probably look like a Mars landing pad when all is said and done (mature kohlrabi kind of look like sputniks) . The extra turnip greens are now in the fridge.

2. Strawberries are coming – alpine and regular. We got about 4 oz. of them today after picking some Friday. Below is a picture of the size difference between them. The alpines are smaller and more fragile, but taste just as good. Our alpines will be put in ground as a shrub after bearing, as they’re taking over the beets in B1.

Other things growing but not pictured: Brussel sprouts, three kinds of squash, garlic, blueberries, raspberries, sour cherries, potatoes, cucumbers, sunchokes, 4 types of tomatoes, 2 kinds of peppers, carrots, beets, variety greens, radishes, peas, amaranth, sunflowers, flax, cantaloupe, chives, 3 types of onions, asparagus, cilantro, dill, rosemary, mint and some edible flowers.
